The figure you pay this month is the one that catches the eye. For a solar conversation, it is the wrong starting point. A home assessment needs the energy the house actually used in a dated billing period, and a plain note of when the larger appliances run. The peso total mixes that energy with rates and charges that move from cycle to cycle. When you read a Meralco bill for solar with those two jobs in mind, you bring inputs that describe the house instead of a payment that cannot size anything.
Start With The Billing Period And Actual Consumption
Open a recent bill and look for the labels that describe time and energy, not the amount due. Meralco’s illustrative bill layout names a Billing Period, a Bill Date, a Date of Meter Reading and a Date of Next Meter Reading. Those dates tell you which days the meter covered. A period that is longer or shorter than the last one will change the kWh even if household habits stayed the same.
Then find Actual Consumption. That is the electricity the meter recorded between the previous reading and the current reading, shown in kilowatt-hours. Your monthly consumption and your rate this month sit nearby as context. The Bill Computation Summary and the charges for this billing period explain what you owe. They do not replace the kWh figure.
Your billing period and actual consumption are separate from the amount you need to pay. Keep that split in view. The electricity consumption in kWh is the solar-relevant quantity on the page: how much energy the house took from the grid in that window. The payable amount folds in the rate this month and the other line items in the computation summary. Two homes can pay different amounts for similar kWh, and one home can pay a different amount next month for similar use. An assessment that starts from the peso figure is already answering a billing question, not an energy one.
Write the billing period dates and the actual consumption on a note, or keep a clear photo of those fields. You do not need account numbers or meter identifiers for this step. The dates and the kWh are the working pair.
Compare Earlier Bills Without Assuming Equal Periods
One cycle is a snapshot. If the house runs differently in the hot months, during school terms, or when someone works from home, a single bill can mislead. Where you still have earlier bills, line up the same fields: period start and end, then actual consumption. Do not average pesos. Do not treat every cycle as a neat thirty-day block.
Meter reading dates drift. A longer interval can look like a jump in use when the household did nothing new. A shorter interval can look like a drop. Compare kWh only after you have compared the dates. If two periods are similar in length and the kWh moved, that movement is worth explaining in your own words: extra air conditioning, guests, a new appliance, or a stretch when the house was empty.
Gaps in the pile are normal. Bring what you have. A recent bill with the kWh visible is the minimum. Several bills give a better picture when use changes through the year. We use that history to understand the enquiry. We do not turn a stack of totals into a system size from the desk.
If the property is not on a Meralco service, the field names on your bill may differ. Use the same method: dated period, consumed energy, then payable amount as a separate fact. Recheck any utility-specific credit or export rules on that utility’s current pages when you get to connection questions. This reading habit is about your consumption, not a claim that every distribution utility prints the same layout.
Add When The Major Loads Run
The bill still cannot tell us whether those kilowatt-hours happened while the sun was up. A monthly total is silent on schedule. Daytime air conditioning, a home office, a pump, laundry, or cooking after dark all land in the same actual consumption figure.
For a home assessment, that timing is the distinction that changes the conversation. Generation on the roof is available in daylight. A house that is empty until evening still has a real kWh history. It does not have the same daytime demand as a house that cools rooms and runs equipment through the afternoon. We start with your daily routine because the bill cannot supply it.
Keep the note simple. List the larger appliances and roughly when they run on a typical weekday and weekend: morning, middle of the day, evening, overnight. You do not need a laboratory log. You do need to separate loads that usually coincide with daylight from loads that wait until people are home after work. If use is seasonal, say so. If you are unsure, say you are unsure. An honest gap is more useful than a guessed hour presented as fact.
This is also why the peso total is a poor proxy for daytime demand. Rates and charges can rise while the schedule stays the same, or the schedule can shift while the bill looks familiar. The assessment question is how the house uses energy through the day, not how painful the last payment felt.
If stored energy or selected backup matters later, that is a different list: which circuits you care about after dark or during an outage. Do not fold that into the bill-reading step. First establish consumption and timing. Backup behaviour needs its own design discussion and a site-specific check. A standard grid-connected arrangement should not be assumed to keep the house powered when the grid is down.
Separate Energy Use From Power and Panel Ratings
Quotations often mix units until they sound interchangeable. They are not. Kilowatts measure power, while kilowatt-hours measure energy. Power is the rate at which electricity is used or produced at a moment. Energy is that rate accumulated over time. Your Meralco actual consumption is energy. It is kWh for a dated period.
A kilowatt (kW) figure on equipment is about capacity or instantaneous demand: what a circuit, an inverter, or a load can draw or deliver at once. A household that runs several large appliances together can hit a power limit even when the monthly kWh looks moderate. The bill does not print that coincidence. Your appliance note is the place to flag what tends to run at the same time.
Kilowatt-peak (kWp) is a panel array rating. A panel rating describes power under specified conditions, not how much electricity your home uses in a month. That is the practical meaning of kWh vs kWp solar: one number is your recorded energy use, the other is a nameplate for equipment under test conditions. Roof orientation, tilt, shade, dust, conversion and wiring all affect what an array actually produces. None of those site facts live on the bill.
Do not convert your kWh into a panel count with a rule of thumb. Do not assume that a 5 kWp array, a 5 kW inverter and a 5 kWh battery are the same object. They answer different questions: array rating, power handling, and stored energy. If a later proposal uses those labels, ask which quantity each number describes.
What The Bill Leaves For The Site And The Quotation
Consumption and timing help us qualify what you are asking for. They do not finish the job. A roof photograph can start a conversation. A qualified look at the roof still has to consider shade from trees, neighbouring buildings, vents and other obstructions, plus condition, access and electrical route. Ownership and permission matter if the property is rented, the roof is shared, or renovation is already planned.
The bill also cannot tell you what a price includes. A peso history does not define mounting, electrical work, connection tasks or storage. When you later compare the scope of a solar quotation, check that each proposal names equipment, site work and exclusions against the same job. A larger nameplate is not automatically a better match for the house you described.
Export credits, if you pursue them later with Meralco, sit in a different process from this reading step. Meralco’s net-metering guidance is for customers on its network who meet its current programme rules. Bill credits for exported energy appear after enrolment, metering changes and commissioning, and they are not a one-for-one stand-in for every retail charge. You do not need those credit lines to prepare an assessment. You need import consumption and a usage note. If you already export or already have a bi-directional meter, say so, and keep using actual consumption as the energy record rather than treating credits as a sizing input.

That bundle answers which figures help an assessment and why the peso total is not enough: energy and timing describe the house, while charges describe a bill.
